Bitter-sweet News

Some happy and sad news to start with. If there is any doubt that ecigs are a valuable aid in breaking away from tobacco use, forum user, D Stanley Querfurth's story should serve as a good example of what can be achieved. Here's an edited quote from Stan.

I started with 18mg nicotine and a ego t ...
it took me a few month to get to GG,
but when I began to rebuild my atomisers I also began to mix my own liquid.
I reduced the nicotine level every time I had to mix new liquid..
Today I am off any nicotine, and after a while
I stopped vaping too..

Stan has been a valued member of the GG forum, posting great pictures of his weird and wonderful set ups as well as offering advice on the compatibility of old and newer GG parts. I'm really happy for Stan that he has been able to reach this goal but I'll miss seeing his posts and pictures.

Proteus

Imeo has stated Proteus will be ready before Christmas. At the time of writing this gives us around 4 weeks to go. It's not too long before people will be able to own their own piece of the latest GG technology. To recap and for anyone new to Proteus here is my huge list of collected information:

  • Proteus will be 100mm in length and 17mm total width
  • It will take a 14500 battery
  • Proteus will be the first 14500 tube battery holder with electronics to keep the voltage steady, something that those batteries need
  • It will be first battery holder mod with removable electronics on it
  • It will have a venting cap for safety just like the GGTS
  • The tube will be engraved with a deep engraving, (My guess is wings and serial number)
  • No springs anywhere inside Proteus (battery or button). Springs are what cause all the problems in any kind of electrical devices
  • Adjustable front cap so battery will always make contact even without a spring
  • AD control (like GGTS)
  • Separate electronic button unit seperate from the main tube, that can be swapped out if electronics fail.
  • The button has the following functions:

                         lock-unlock option
protection if we put battery in the wrong way
                         short cirquit protection
boost voltage from 3 to 7,4 volts
cut current if button gets pressed more than 14 seconds
                         flat SS button

Pre-production Golden Greek Proteus
Early pre-production Proteus

  • Atomizer detection
  • Working atomizer check
  • Battery check
  • On/Off Mode
  • 18 seconds cutoff
  • Short circuit protection
  • Reverse battery protection
  • Over-discharge battery protection
  • Thermal monitoring
  • Atomizer doesn't work at all when you go from one menu to another, something that saves battery and doesn't annoy the user
  • Watt range: 5-25 with 1 battery and 5-35 with 2 batteries increased by 1 watt per push of the button (please operate Proteus up to 15 watts)
  • You know when you reach the lowest and the upper limit of watts
  • It works with 1 battery 3,7 volt, with 2x3,7 volt batteries and with 2x3 volt batteries
  • Remembers your last set up
  • 8,3 ampere upper limit and 400 mA lowest limit
  • 8 volts upper limit and 0,5 volt lowest limit
  • Resistance range: 0,4-12,5 ohms
  • The smallest and thinnest electronic part today
  • It goes on and off its tube like a mobile card
  • Totally mechanical button. There is no electronic button on the pcba
  • Button comes off for cleaning without any effort. Just grab it with your nails and put it out
  • Five colour led
  • It was VV/VW mode. I left only VW mode and I added 1 more secret feature. Ι will let you know about it when time comes.

There is a pre-order list for Proteus where you can claim a serial number. You can see the list of available serials at the link below.

Available Serial Numbers List

Imeo has also said that sometime soon he will ask that people on the list prepay, to allow them time to confirm their number and pay for it. For anyone wanting more information about Proteus you can get to the Official thread below.

GrimmGreen Tilemahos Review

There are a host of cig reviwers on YouTube. In contrast to all the lesser reviewers the are a core of more experienced guys who really stand out. One of these is Nick or GrimmGreen who has been around for a long time. I watch a lot of his videos for pure entertainment value, he's a pretty cool and funny guy and one of my favourite vaping YouTubers. He recently posted a quick review of Tilemahos which I'm sharing below.

It might not have been the cleanest build I've ever seen but it shows how there isn't too much effort involved in setting up a Tilemahos. I like the fact Nick didn't break Tilemahos all the way down to the individual parts. Nick shows Tilemahos as a normal user would use it after initial setup. The title, Kayfun Killer, is one I've seen or heard on a few videos. I've never used a Kayfun but I suppose for those that have it serves as a way of comparing the experience.

As well as doing reviews Nick, along with his wife amber, runs his own ejuice company called Namber Juice. The site says this about their juice -
All the juices on NamberJuice.com are 100% Original Creations, Made in the USA to the highest standards with nothing but the finest ingredients available in the world!
Definitely worth checking out if you are still on your journey to find the perfect juice. You can visit the site at the following link.

Vaping Style - What's yours?

Despite being a GG only guy I do have different options allowing me to vape in many different ways. Rebuildables offer a huge variety of coil and wicking options. Depending on how I like to vape I can achieve it easily with the equipment I have. There is a good selection of Golden Greek products, with more on the way, that provide every option you could want.

An example of one GG users arsenal of possibilities!
Then there is the world outside GG. The amount of different mods, ecigs and other vaping devices is too huge to count. From cig-a-likes to pipes and box mods there is a device for everyone. You also have different wires, wick, tanks, drippers. The list is endless. On top of all that is the variety of watts, amps, volts and resistance that people use. This last set of variables is what I want to write about today.

Although it's not something I am too concerned with I am aware of the sub-ohm, cloud chasing sub culture within vaping. I do like big clouds but it's something I find I get anyway just using normal builds. I have only tried dual coils a couple of times and have never attempted anything more exotic such as some of the builds you can find on Youtube.

So with this in mind I want to share a recent video that came up on my news feed. It is a short piece by Action 10 news that doesn't go too deep into the subject matter. I liked that the first guy said as well as nicotine, he'd reduced his beer intake too! I also like the fact that a doctor seemed to be recommending vaping to smoking patients.

The reason I wanted to share the video though is the clips of people 'dragging' on their ecigs. To bend over exhaling before taking a monster, eye watering drag, then releasing a bus sized cloud (a bit of an exaggeration) seems over the top and unnatural to me. I like to vape like I smoked. Smooth, easy drags without looking too out of place amongst other smokers. But am I missing out?

I may have this all wrong and these are just examples for the camera or for show. Maybe these guys vape differently at other times. Either way I have no real problem with it, I shouldn't really knock it 'til I've tried it. The news video is at the link below or you can find many more examples online.

Safe To Vape - Action 10 News Special Report

How do you vape?

I'm sure there are a million answers to this question. but what I'm really interested in finding out is -

  • Do you vape differently to the way you smoked?
  • Do you sub-ohm? Cloud chase?
  • Do you spend a lot of time and effort on your set up?
  • What set ups do you use?
I look forward to reading any answers.

UPDATE - Video added

Pic of the Month - October 2014

My choice for October's top photo goes to this shiny pair from 'Exciter' in Istanbul. Despite there being less pictures posted for October it was really hard to pick one picture as there were so many I loved. I decided on this duo as they remind me of the first GG pictures I ever saw, when people would post their GG and AFS combos.

With Esterigon, Proteus and VIR, Imeo has been moving away from these bigger mod set ups. Time will tell if these are the last of the GG Towers of Power. I hope not as a big battery, all day vape is one of my favourite things about Golden Greeks.

They look great too, as can be seen above.

VIR looking amazing

Further to my last post regarding Imeo's latest video on VIR I have now had a chance to watch the full one and a half hour video. As well as the video I have caught up on the huge thread over on ECF. I must admit to having a bit of information overload but I will do my best to cover the main points of the video and thread here. First here is a look at the PCB from VIR.

As you can see the board is tiny. This latest GG innovation has taken 3 years in design and production. The reason for the size is part of the design, Imeo wanted to make something very small to reduce the overall size of the mod. As well as the size the main purpose of VIR is to offer a product that does more than provide a good vape, it offers a much safer vape.

It achieves this in a number of ways all powered by the tiny PCB which is the heart of VIR. The technology behind VIR is all programmed into a unit the size of a thumbnail. There are too many functions to list them all again but you can check out the full list HERE.

The main and most important features from the video are, in my opinion, the following -
  • Prevents inhalation of acrolein (produced when VG gets beyond 280 degrees)
  • Can detect and prevent a dry burn
  • Reverse battery protection
  • Over-discharge protection for battery
  • Ease of operation (Although the video is over an hour long it is mainly highlighting the processes VIR goes through to maintain a constant, safe vape. In normal use most of the functionality goes on with no user input.)
  • Auto wire detection with different LED indicators

ECF Thread

The thread on ECF does have a lot of useful information but became sidetracked for a while with some discussion regarding patents and patent laws. I feel this is an issue for Imeo and we as users should focus on the end product. Having said that there have been a few new nuggets of information.
  • VIR will come in steel and brass versions
  • Will cost 180 Euro's
  • Expected release sometime in the next 2 months
There are also some graphs posted with VIR test results by Dr.Farsalinos. The most impressive one is the one below. Notice how VIR reaches the desired temperature very quickly and then keeps that temperature constant during the draw.

As we get closer to the release of VIR it is becoming clearer how good this new technology promises to be. The long wait seems well worth it, VIR looks set to be a great addition to the GG line up.
